I always had the desire to age gracefully and naturally, and because of this I am consistent with my skincare regimen each day.
Here are the 5 simple skin care products I have been using for a long time that have been beneficial for keeping my skin at its best.
Sunscreen
Depending on your skin type, you can decide whether mineral or chemical sunscreens best suit you. I have tried various brands of both types and both work for me. The three things I look for when deciding which sunscreen to purchase are : If the SPF is 50 or higher, If the cream will irritate my eyes and if the product is expired. Very simple.
I do use sunscreen on my eyelids and under-eyes each day so it is really important to be able to go throughout my day without my eyes burning.
The Sunscreen I use around my eyes is the same one I use on my children which is Banana Boat’s Baby Mineral SPF 50 Sunscreen. Banana Boat Simply Protect Baby Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 50+ : Amazon.ca: Beauty & Personal Care. It leaves a white-cast but doesn’t burn my eyes. I have tried using it on my entire face but it does make me white like a ghost.
The sunscreen I use for my face, neck, décolleté and hands is Banana Boat’s SPF 60 kid’s sunscreen which doesn’t leave a white-cast: Banana Boat Kids Tear Free Sunscreen Lotion, Broad Spectrum, SPF 60, 240mL : Amazon.ca: Beauty & Personal Care.
I know the product states that it's tear-free, but for me it bothers my eyes intensely hence why I use two different creams.
2. Retinol
I started using over the counter retinol only recently. It works wonders in targeting wrinkles, discoloration, and combating mild acne. I wish I had used it much sooner! I like to call it Botox in a bottle because it makes your skin look so radiant and smooth, except you are able to move your facial muscles which is important to me.
The affordable over the counter retinol I use at night is L’Oreal Paris 0.3 % Pure Night Retinol: L’Oréal Paris Night Retinol Serum for Face, Revitalift Triple Power LZR, With 0.3% Pure Retinol, Moisturizes Skin and Eliminates Look of Deep Wrinkles, Skincare, 30 ml : Amazon.ca.
Moisturize Day & Night
We all know how important it is to moisturize our skin in order to lessen the signs of aging , but which cream to use is where it can get confusing. For my combination skin type I use dermatologist recommended CeraVe moisturizer in the morning and at night : CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, Daily Face, Hands, & Body Cream Moisturizer for Dry Skin With Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramides for Women and Men. Sensitive skin, Oil-free, Non-comedogenic, Fragrance-Free, 539 Grams : Amazon.ca: Beauty & Personal Care
I used to go with more luxurious brands thinking that they were better because they were more expensive, but when I learnt that the price tag didn’t mean anything in terms of quality I stopped buying expensive luxury brands. By just checking the ingredient list you will be able to compare the two and will discover that there isn’t much of a difference between them, or that the cheaper brands can even be better! It is all marketing. More on this subject later!
Double-Cleanse Everyday!
I start my day with rinsing my skin with just water so that my skin keeps its natural oils. In the evening I wash my face twice with two different cleansers to make sure that the products I use during the day really come off and won’t cause me to break out.
The first face wash I use is CeraVe’s foaming face wash for normal to oily skin: CeraVe FOAMING Face Wash, Gentle Face Cleanser for Men & Women with Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide, Ceramides. Makeup Remover for oily skin, won’t clog pores. Non-Comedogenic, Sensitive Skin, 473ML : Amazon.ca: Beauty & Personal Care
Secondly, I cleanse with Neutrogena’s oil-free 2% salicylic acid acne wash: Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash, Facial Cleanser with 2% Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment, Daily Oil-Free Acne Face Wash for Acne-Prone Skin with Salicylic Acid, 269mL : Amazon.ca: Beauty & Personal Care
I leave the cleanser on my face anywhere from 2-10 minutes for extra assurance that all the dirt and grime are indeed being removed.
I’m intentional about taking care of my skin as it is a contributing factor to what makes me feel confident each day. Afterall, I only have one skin to live so I’ll take care of it the best I can.
