When my husband and I first laid eyes on our house we immediately fell in-love as we felt connected to its old charm. With its high ceilings, wall mouldings, and European style, we knew this was the home for us!
When we purchased this century-old house it came with no furniture or decor, so it became a real project to furnish and style it. Although we are far from finishing our renovation upgrades to making our vision become a reality, we have furnished our home with items we love.
I very much appreciate beautiful antiques. The ones I look for are unique timeless pieces which I mostly find at estate sales and auctions but I have also been lucky by a few hidden gems at thrift shops. It is absolutely thrilling to see different pieces that differ vastly from one vendor to another. There is a lot to take in; the history, the unmatched quality, and the unique detailing of each item.
I am illustrating to you through my dining room photos how I use antiques in order to make your home beautiful and welcoming without feeling outdated.
Here are my recommendations to create an elegant look in your home :
Handmade- Wool Persian Carpets
I truly appreciate and love these cultural carpets. The high quality and unique designs bring me a lot of joy to look at each day. They add warmth and class to each room.
Brass and Crystal Chandeliers
I fancy chandeliers. I have antique ones that are made out of just brass and ones with crystals. Both add a beautiful touch that brings the style of the room together.
Oil Paintings
I have not yet painted the walls in my house, so until then my paintings add character to each room.
For the dining room I chose a floral theme and for the boudoir a nautical theme as my husband enjoys sailing.
House Plants
A touch of green in each room not only adds beauty, but also instills calm and relaxation. I have different types of plants in the house, but my favourite is ‘birds of paradise/Strelitzia reginae’ which I have had for eleven years and is still thriving.
Creating a home that is suited to our personal taste and needs is something that takes time. I wish I could snap my fingers and have my house styled perfectly the way I envision it. “Rome wasn’t built in a day” is a saying we’ve all heard; we neither need to go crazy by trying to get our projects done all at once, nor do we not have to care at all. Little changes overtime will get you to where you want to be.
